It is clear that some immune dysfunction exists in patients with atopic dermatitis, but whether the dysfunction is the cause or the effect of the disease remains to be eluciated. Recently, disorder of the skin barrier function orginating from a deficiency of ceramide content in the stratum corneum has been considered as the another reason for atopic dermatitis. The goal of treatment in atopic dermatitis is to restore hydreation to the skin, to identify and eliminate triggering factors, and to decrease pruritus and inflammation.
